When cavities cause extreme decay, Dr. Brian J. Waggle may perform crown lengthening in Zanesville, Ohio, to help restore a tooth. A routine surgical procedure, crown lengthening is used to change the contour of the gum line. Contrary to its name, crown lengthening does not lengthen the crown of the tooth; it actually lowers the gum line. This is done to expose more tooth structure so that our dentist can more easily place a dental crown or dental filling. Dr. Waggle may also perform crown lengthening to remove a “gummy” smile and help you achieve your smile goals.

The following can cause your gums to be too low or too high:

  • Genetics
  • A health problem
  • Certain prescription drugs

Before performing crown lengthening, our dentist may draw a line to mark your new gum line so that you can see how much gum tissue is being removed and what your gums will look like after the procedure. Anesthetic will be used to numb the area before our dentist removes the gum tissue.

No matter what the reason for crown lengthening, you can rest assured that it will be performed with our dentist’s signature caring hand and eye for detail. If you are interested in learning more about crown lengthening or any of the procedures that we offer, please contact Northpointe Dental at 740-454-6644.
