Brushing your teeth cuts back on plaque, keeps teeth and gums healthy, and contributes to overall oral health. But is there a better way to brush? We’d love to discuss some tips and tricks to brushing that can lead to a healthier smile.

First, make sure you always use toothpaste to brush. Toothpaste acts as a cleaner for your teeth, where your toothbrush is the brush that spreads it to where it needs to go. Only a pea-sized dot of toothpaste is needed for a full-mouth clean.

Before you start to brush, set a timer for two minutes. Proper, thorough brushing takes two full minutes to accomplish, so make sure you use the whole time to carefully brush each of your teeth.

When you do start brushing, use soft, gentle strokes to effectively clean your teeth. Being too rough with your teeth can cause sensitivity and wear out your toothbrush. Use these gentle strokes for the full two minutes, paying special attention to every single tooth.

While you brush every tooth, don’t forget to brush the inner and outer sides of your teeth. Make sure to also brush all of your chewing surfaces, like the tops of your molars. To freshen your breath and add to an overall “clean” feeling, you can also brush your tongue.

That’s all there is to it.
