Facts About Gum Disease

Would you like to know all about gum disease? If so, our dentist, Dr. Brian J. Waggle, is happy to help you! Today, he is happy to share facts about gum disease on our blog because the more you know, the better. In fact, the more you know, the better chance you have of preventing the disease, which is strongly encouraged. So, our dentist is happy to share the following facts:

-Plaque is the major cause of gum disease. It sticks to the teeth and gumline and irritates the gums, making them swell and bleed. It’s very important to remove the plaque quickly before matters get worse.

-If plaque is not removed quickly, it can turn into tartar. Tartar is a very toxic substance that makes the gums pull away from the teeth. The tartar infects the gum pockets and spreads underneath the gums. There, it attacks the jawbone. This causes loose and lost teeth.

-Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two stages of gum disease.

-Gingivitis can be treated with a deep professional dental cleaning. Periodontitis is much harder to treat. In fact, oftentimes periodontitis needs scaling and root planing, laser periodontal therapy, bone grafts, gum grafts and other procedures to treat it.
