Having sore gums can be quite inconvenient and troublesome, especially if they bleed and swell. Unfortunately, these are most likely symptoms of gingivitis and periodontitis, which are bigger problems than just sore gums. It’s very important to restore the health of your gums so you can have a top-notch smile and oral health. To help you return to the healthy gums you deserve, our dentist, Dr. Brian J. Waggle, has some tips for you.

The first thing you should do is reflect on your diet. Do you have healthy and balanced foods and drinks? If not, it’s time to change your diet. It’s important to eat tooth-healthy foods and drink tooth-healthy drinks regularly. Those can include products with Vitamin C and calcium.

Second, make sure you have a diligent oral hygiene routine that involves brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, rinsing daily, and attending your dental checkups every six months. These things can help you remove the harmful bacteria that irritate and harm your gums on a frequent basis.

Third, quit smoking. That is, if you smoke. Smoking is very dangerous for your gums and your overall health. Tobacco and the other chemicals in cigarettes and other tobacco products can harm your oral tissues more than you realize. So, please stop the habit ASAP.
